On July 1, 2007, the Ontario Government put an end to excessively noisy workplaces.

Regulations regarding noise limits in the workplace are changing, which means businesses should also be changing to adjust to the new requirements. Hearing loss due to exposure to loud noises is a serious workplace hazard. According to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, hearing conditions resulted in an estimated $100 million in compensation costs being paid between 1995 and 2004.

Hearing loss is hazardous because it can often go unnoticed. Hearing loss is very gradual, and often people do not notice until significant damage has been done, and most of the time it is too late to fix. Since there is usually no pain associated with hearing loss, it is no wonder why it can go unnoticed. One can only keep turning up the volume on the television for so long before hearing loss is discovered.

The Ontario Government is lowering the accepted noise exposure from 90 decibels for an eight-hour work period to 85 decibels.

If you have to shout at someone who is an arm’s length away the noise level is probably greater than 85 decibels. If you have to shout at someone who is directly beside you, the noise level in your workplace is definitely greater than 85 decibels.

Your workplace is too loud if you answer yes to any of these questions:

1) Do people have to raise their voices?
2) Do people who work in noisy environments have ringing in their ears at the end of a shift?
3) Do they find when returning home from work that they have to increase the volume on their car radio higher than they did when going to work?
4) Does a person who has worked in a noisy workplace for years have problems understanding conversations at parties or restaurants, or in crowds where there are many voices and "competing" noises?

Would you like to work in a factory that is too loud to hear warning signals? Chances are the answer is no, because noise can sometimes be more dangerous than the loud equipment itself. Noise can reduce productivity and ultimately contribute to accidents.

It is not practical for companies to invest in brand new, quieter equipment simply because the laws have changed. And employees should not have to constantly protect themselves with earplugs, which only reduce noise by a few decibels.

QABA Composite Sound Panels from Shaver Industries are designed to reduce noise levels in the workplace which creates a safer environment for workers and customers. Shaver has over 25 years experience in noise abatement and hundreds of satisfied customers all over Canada.

The QABA panels are very durable and are designed to work in a variety of different environments. They can be fashioned into separator walls, divider partitions, wall linings and can withstand temperatures between -29°C and 82°C. The panels have a combination of sound absorber and barrier technology, which is designed to provide maximum noise reduction.

Often times, the excessive, unwanted noise in the workplace comes from one extremely loud source. In this case, the QABA panels can be fashioned into noise enclosures, which creates a cost-effective solution to reduce overall noise levels while still allowing easy access for frequent equipment use.

In more drastic cases, QABA panels can be mounted along the walls and ceilings of the workplace. This will absorb the sound waves and prevent unwanted echo throughout the facility resulting in a quieter work environment.

Equipment World is a proud distributor of Shaver Industries Inc. products. It announced a 50% energy reduction target and a 65% greenhouse gas reduction target. The entire European Union is setting a 20% reduction target within a decade!

In both of these cases, the long-term goals are clear and measurable. The ability to achieve these goals breaks down into a small number of choices involving building construction, manufacturing processes, and clean energy supplies.

Often, long-term energy goals require reshaping basic infrastructure, supply, management and distribution. This requires a multi-year view of investment planning and implementation.

Energy prices are expected to rise 9% next year, and whether or not a business wants to save energy to save the environment or to save some money, now is a better time than ever.

A survey conducted by the Institute for Building Efficiency at Johnson Controls discovered that energy management is more of an important priority in India and China than it is in Europe and North America. At least 80% of those surveyed in India and China were more likely to consider energy management quite important, compared with 55% in Europe 53% in North America.

A common misconception with energy saving is that the investment might not yield immediate efficiencies, cost reductions, or carbon reductions. If you were to wash clothes with cold water instead of hot water for a month, would you expect to save money and reduce your carbon footprint instantly? Probably not.

It is possible that a combination of efficiency, emissions, or cost may temporarily go wrong until the next piece of the puzzle that makes up the energy solution is put into place.

Sometimes we have unrealistic expectations that energy saving will lead to results that improve cost, efficiency, and emissions every year without fail. Not every partial investment will give instant paybacks of 30% of more.

“No one would expect a half-built factory to make profitable products,” (Peter Garforth) so we should not expect half-built plans of energy saving to provide companies with smaller energy bills and an even smaller carbon footprint.

Saving on energy costs is the biggest priority of energy managers. In all regions except North America, lowering greenhouse gas emissions was the second-most important factor driving energy efficiency.

What we can do is lay out the total investment required to make possible the long-term goal, along with expected costs, emissions and efficiency profiles on a year-by-year basis.

This Summer, try some energy saving tips:
• Close windows whenever the air conditioning is on
• Close off rooms that don’t need cooling
• Clean air conditioning filters often
• Shelter rooms from sunlight (close blinds or curtains)
• Keep the furnace pilot light off in the summer
• Avoid using the oven to prevent heating of house
• Do “wet chores” in the morning to keep humidity down (washing clothes, mopping, etc.)
• Buy a low energy fan to circulate the air and make it feel cooler

Large industrial and commercial buildings can invest in a High Volume, Low Speed fan to drastically reduce long-term energy costs.

Workplaces can be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer without raising company costs. With a Rite Hite Revolution fan, a business can benefit in numerous ways:

• Air from fan gently passes over employees to keep them cooler, productive, and comfortable
• Air is continuously circulated within the facility, keeping floors and products dry and cool
• Delivers energy cost saving of up to 30%
• Costs pennies an hour to operate
• Creates a consistent floor to ceiling temperature
• Moves air up to 7mph
• Covers 22,000 square feet
• Increases comfort and productivity
• Quiet operation
• Even in the winter, air from the ceilings is pushed down to the floor to keep employees warmer

Equipment World is a proud distributor of Rite Hite products. Classifying work into categories such as light, moderate, and heavy, helps to determine the heat load on employees.
How the body heats or cools depends on the following factors:
• Air temperature
• Radiant heat load
• Physical activity
• Cooling by sweat
• Body adjustments to heat (acclimatization)
• Humidity

In Ontario, summers are often humid and can reach levels of 100% humidity, raising the overall temperature drastically. The higher the humidity, the lower the evaporative heat loss and the higher the possibility for heat stress. High humidity prevents sweat from evaporating. This explains why on sticky, humid days, the air can be as hot and thick as a bowl of soup.

How does the body release heat?
• 65% of body heat is released through radiation, which is the movement of heat energy from a warmer object to a cooler object
• 10% of body heat is released through convection, which is the transfer of heat energy from a warmer object to a cooler object through differences in density and action of gravity
• 23% of body heat is released through evaporation of perspiration from the skin, which is the cooling of a surface by turning liquid into vapor
• 2% of body heat is released through conduction, which is the direct transfer from a warmer object to a cooler object through direct contact

In short, the body releases heat through several different methods. However, in an environment of 95°F, radiation, convection, and conduction no longer work. This leaves only evaporation, which can sometimes be made worse from the heavy protective clothing of firefighters, welders, or hazmat workers.

At a temperature of 95°F, the human body cannot keep up with internal heat generation levels, and the inner core temperature rises. The only way to release the heat is for up to 48% of blood to be pumped to the skin to produced perspiration. You know something is very wrong when somebody stops sweating in hot conditions.

Why is extreme heat a problem? There is blood loss to the organs, muscles, and brain because the heat is busy pumping blood to the skin. The heart works harder to deliver the same volume of blood to the organs to keep them nourished. In this case, the heart will beat up to 150 times per minute! Dehydration is another concern. The thickening of the blood from dehydration is what can cause a heart attack.

Controlling heat in the workplace is something that should not be taken lightly. Consider the following work practices:
• Schedule maintenance and repair jobs in hot areas for cooler months
• Schedule hot jobs for the cooler part of the day
• Acclimatize workers by exposing them to progressively longer periods to hot work environments
• Reduce the physical demands
• Use relief workers or assign extra workers for physically demanding jobs
• Provide cool water or liquids to workers; avoid caffeine, alcohol, and sugary drinks
• Provide rest periods in cool areas with water breaks
• Monitor workers who are at risk of heat stress
• Provide heat stress training

Not only is controlling heat important for employees’ health, but it is important for the productivity of a company as a whole. NASA studied how the performance of workers changes when the temperature changes. In an 80°F workplace, employees made five errors after an hour and 19 errors after three hours. At 90°F, employees made 9 errors after an hour and 27 errors after three hours. And at 95°F, employees made 60 errors after an hour and an astonishing 138 errors after three hours. Hopefully these errors were minor, but in a physically demanding job, errors can sometimes be fatal.

Even a 2% dehydration level from heat can significantly reduce reaction time and focus of workers. A study shows that 80% of the US population starts the work day in an already dehydrated state.
What can you do? Since you are probably not the Greek God who controls weather, control everything that is in your power to control to keep your employees, coworkers, and yourself happy, healthy, and productive.

Imagine having a workplace that is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Rite Hite Revolution fans improve both air flow and cash flow all year round. In British Columbia alone, Conservation Officers receive 12,000 problem bear complaints each year.

There is only one animal in all of North America that will actively kill humans for food, even if it is unprovoked. What animal is it?

a) Black Bear
b) Polar Bear
c) Grizzly Bear

If you guessed the polar bear, you’re correct! Black bears and grizzly bears will in fact attack humans, but not usually for sport. There have only been seven deaths caused by black bears since 1916.

The Ministry of Natural Resources proposed that the prime way of preventing bothersome bears is investing in a proper garbage can and reducing garbage related odors, removing bird feeders during summer months, and cleaning outdoor grills after every use.

Why do bears eat garbage in the first place? Bears like to live near both water and open areas like fields. Fields have grasses, herbs, and berries, which are bears’ favourite foods.

Animals hibernate because in the frigid winter months natural sources of food are extraordinarily scarce. Grass and berries are covered with several feet of cold, white snow, and unless bears are interested in making snow cones, there is generally no food available for them. Bears simply bypass winter when food disappears. In the months before hibernation, bears must build up their body weight. They can gain nearly forty pounds of fat per week!

Humans must be on the lookout for bears during the summer, especially when bears are frantically scouring for food. Bears are naturally attracted to the smell of our garbage cans and what is inside of them. They see garbage as an easy meal when finding natural sources of food is difficult. Bears will tip over and jump on cans until something comes out. Luckily for us, this is not a year-round issue; usually only from April – October when the snow has melted and bears are not hibernating. If your garbage can is not sturdy enough to handle the rigorous rough-housing by a bear, and he gets his paws on your grub, you’ll have quite the mess to clean up!

There are many suggested solutions to prevent bears from rummaging through garbage cans. Some include:
• Use bear-proof garbage containers. These have twist and lock lids, making it difficult for the bears to get inside them. Bears cannot crush or rip the reinforced sides, tops and bottoms.
• Store your garbage cans in your garage or shed.
• Seal thrown-out food in plastic bags or disposable air-tight containers, or add lime to garbage to eliminate odors that can attract bears. If necessary, separate food waste from non-food garbage and keep discarded food materials in a garage or shed until garbage pick-up day.
• Leave a bright light on the spot where you leave your garbage cans, if you don't have a garage or shed to store them. Set up a scarecrow nearby. Bears are not confrontational unless humans injure or corner them.
• Wash containers to be thrown away or recycled before placing them in garbage cans. This reduces odors that can attract the bears to your cans.
• Clean garbage cans regularly, using disinfectants, bleach or white vinegar. Spray inside with ammonia between cleanings to help discourage bears from getting to your garbage cans.

Another solution is relocating bears to other areas. Although quite a hefty chore, it sounds like a decent solution until you hear the statistics for the well being of the bears... at least 50% of bears die immediately after being relocated, either from starvation, or from resident bear attacks in hopes of protecting their territory.

The prime reason bears and humans conflict is because of improper care of garbage cans and other attractants. Bears cannot change, but we can. It is our responsibility to make changes in daily routines to make our communities safe for both us and the bears.

Fortunately, there are some simple solutions available… Bears can be less bothersome with the use of the right garbage bins. Equipment World sells Bear Bins by Bear Necessities. These cans have been field tested and approved by bear management specialists in North America since 1997

To learn more information about Bear Bins, visit our website at: http://www.equipworld.com/

The information within this article has been referenced from:
http://www.bearaware.bc.ca/
www.pa.msu.edu/sci_theatre/ask_st/021898.html
http://www.ehow.com/how_2083852_keep-bears-away-from-garbage.html
